SUMMARY:Madera Canyon – eBird Global Big Day
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this trip is free.\nTrip Difficulty: Moderate. Moderately difficult walk over a worn but rocky trail, covering about three miles round trip with the turn-around at the Picnic grounds. Some areas require climbing over rocks or possibly crossing the stream on rocks. Bathrooms available at both ends of the trail. No drinking water available.\nJoin Scott Crabtree and Kirsten Howe for a birding hike through Madera Canyon while we contribute to the eBird Global Big Day. This will not be a Big Day, per se, but a birding exploration of the lower sections of Madera Canyon and contribute our sightings to the larger eBird/Cornell global effort. Starting at the Proctor Road parking area, we’ll hike up the Madera Canyon Trail to at least the Madera Picnic Grounds. Depending on trail conditions, we may proceed further up the Nature Trail into Santa Cruz Co. We’ll look for the typical Sky Island specialities and any migrant or early wintering birds.\nBring your optics of choice, appropriate footwear, and food and water. Final trip plans will be emailed to participants. Madera Canyon has a daily use fee of $8 per car or you must have a valid Coronado National Forest Annual Pass or Interagency (America the Beautiful) Pass, including the Annual, Senior, Access, or Military Pass, displayed on the driver’s side of the vehicle dashboard. Limited to 8 people.\n \nHeader Image: Elegant Trogon by Shawn Cooper\n
