Description: Arizona is home to one of the richest hummingbird communities in North America, where deserts, mountains, and riparian corridors converge to create remarkable diversity. This program explores the lives of these tiny, high-energy birds—from their dazzling colors and aerial courtship displays to their seasonal movements and unique adaptations for surviving the Southwest. Illustrated with photographs taken in the field, it offers an intimate look at the hummingbirds that make Arizona a global hotspot for these remarkable birds.
Stephen Vaughan brings together the careful observation of an ornithologist with the eye of a photographer. Over fifty years, his photographs have found homes in Audubon, National Geographic, National Wildlife, and Sierra Club. Working primarily in Arizona’s diverse ecosystems, he documents the interplay between wildlife and habitat. Through teaching and mentoring, he encourages photographers to develop deeper connections with their local
environments.
