Avra Valley & Mile Wide Rd with Luke Safford
Saturday, November 14th: 7am – 10am
$35/member, $50/non-member
Trip difficulty: Moderate. Stretches of walking on gravel road with the most at one time being about one mile.
Avra Valley, situated just west of Tucson, is a great place for raptors and sparrows in the fall and winter. We’ll spend a few hours walking the Mile Wide Road area near the CAP recharge ponds searching for raptors like Northern Harrier and Crested Caracara, along with the raptor-like Loggerhead Shrike. Sparrows can be super plentiful depending on the year and we’ll hope for a good selection including Brewer’s, Lark, and Vesper. This is also a great place for Bendire’s Thrasher. Depending on how birdy the road is we may stay on this road the whole time or we may move to other nearby locations. We will meet somewhere on the west side of Tucson at 7am to carpool to the location. Limited to 10 participants.
