Buenos Aires NWR and Aguirre Lake with Luke Safford
Friday, February 13: 6:30am – 2pm
$50/member, $100/non-member
Trip difficulty: Moderate, about two miles walking on uneven, unpaved terrain, little to no
elevation gain.
BANWR offers a wide range of habitats to explore in the winter – restored grasslands, wetlands, and the mixed human habitat around the HQ. Our main location to bird will be sometimes wet/sometimes dry Aguirre Lake just past the refuge headquarters. The walk around the lake bed is just under 1.5 miles and is flat. We’ll hope to find wintering birds such as Northern Harrier, Gray Flycatcher, Crissal Thrasher, and Vesper Sparrow; if there’s any water, hopefully some ducks, too! Carpooling to location will be arranged among participants and we’ll be leaving the Tucson area around 6:30am, and arriving at Aguirre Lake about 8am. We’ll plan to arrive back in Tucson by 2pm. Limited to 10 participants.
